The Gloucestershire crafters helping UK’s largest cat charity care for cats

Nailsworth-based craft enthusiast who set up her own successful needle
felting business are helping Cats Protection raise money this Christmas.

Steffi Stern turned her hobby into a career in 2015 when she set up The Makerss, supplying needle felting kits and equipment from their base in Avening Road, Nailsworth.

Needlefelting is an increasingly popular craft which uses wool and a barbed needle to create beautiful 3D designs, including ornaments, gifts and toys.

Steffi has now produced a unique festive kit for sale exclusively by the charity Cats Protection. The kits – on sale on the charity’s website – contain
everything needed to make a felted cat Christmas bauble. They’ve even produced four different designs, so buyers can choose a colour to match their own moggy.

As well as the kit, Steffi will be giving a live tutorial in an online craftalong – on
Saturday 27 November – where she’ll guide participants through the needle felting process.

Steffi is life-long craft enthusiasts, so setting up our own creative business was a dream come true. Needlefelting has become very popular over the past few years, and we love seeing more people discover and enjoy it.

“Needlefelting is a really good choice for anyone looking to take up a craft – it’s
simple to learn, and you can get a really unique and beautiful result pretty quickly. It can also be very relaxing and a lovely thing to do with family and friends.

“Our animal kits are always especially popular and so we jumped at the chance to work with Cats Protection. It’s a win-win for us – the kits will give people the chance to create their own beautiful felted bauble to treasure for years while raising funds for Cats Protection to help cats in need.”

Zoe Thompson, of Cats Protection’s Events Team, said: “We’re delighted to be
working with The Makerss to help cat lovers raise money for our vital work by doing something fun and festive. Steffi has put together four beautiful kits which will help crafters capture the character of their own feline friend.

“With £10 from the sale of every kit going to Cats Protection, we’ll be able to help even more cats in need this Christmas. Every kit could help pay for worming and flea treatment for a cat, or pay for a warm and cosy bed for a cat in our care while they wait to be rehomed.”

It costs £20 to take part, with £10 going to Cats Protection, and kits are available
now. Participants will be invited to take part in a virtual craftalong on Facebook on Saturday 27 November, starting at 10am, and will be taken step by step through the process of felting their own bauble by Steffi from The Makerss. Anyone who purchases a kit after the date will be given access to a recording of the craftalong.
