Needle Felting Tips We Wish We Knew When We Started

Start with simple shapes

Starting with basic shapes like spheres, cylinders, and cones helps you learn core techniques without getting overwhelmed. They’re the building blocks of nearly all felted designs.

Your needle will break if you bend it — go straight in and out

Felting needles are delicate and will break if twisted or used at an angle. Always stab straight in and out, and avoid bending or forcing the needle.

Don’t over-felt — stop when it’s firm but springy

If you stab too much, the wool can become too dense or even start to distort. Stop when your shape feels firm but still slightly springy.

You don’t need perfection, just progress

Needle felting is a skill that improves with practice. Focus on learning and enjoying the process — perfection isn't required, but progress is celebrated!

Use reference pictures to guide shapes

Whether it’s a real animal, object, or illustration, having a visual guide helps you understand proportions, shapes, and colours more clearly.
